Not every standout collection is about key dates or low mintages. The Terry’s Toners Collection featured in this week’s GreatCollections email is all about color, originality, and eye appeal.
The lineup includes a beautifully toned 1910 Barber dime, a colorful 1918 Lincoln-Illinois commemorative half dollar, and even a modern 1996-D Jefferson nickel pulling strong bids simply because it looks fantastic. Strip away the color and these would be fairly ordinary coins. Add original toning, and suddenly collectors are competing.
Editor’s Note: At the time this article was written, the GreatCollections auction was actively ongoing. The auction has since concluded, and final prices realized may differ from the bid totals discussed below.
Toned coins have become a serious niche over the last couple of decades. Natural color, especially when it’s attractive and well-balanced, can add substantial premiums. The key is originality, and that’s where certified examples help. When major grading services encapsulate toned coins, it gives buyers confidence that the color is market-acceptable.
What I like most about collections like this is the reminder that there’s no single “right” way to collect. You don’t need six-figure rarities to own something special. A coin that stops you in your tracks because of its look can be just as rewarding.
